Geometric Solids:
Lesson 1
Invite the child to the lesson. Take the Geometric Solids off the shelf.
Place box containing the geometric solids on the table where you will be working. Tell child "These are the Geometric Solids."
Open the box and take out the Geometric Solids Book placing it to the side.
Then take out each solid, one at a time. Place each solid softly on the table, making a line of solids. Leave the bases and the labels in the box.
Put the Geometric Solids Book in front of you. Say "This book is about the Geometric Solids. I'm going to read it to you."
Open to the first page and read "This is a sphere." Point out the picture to the child. Then ask "do we have a sphere with our geometric solids?"
Help the child to find the sphere. Say "This is a sphere. What is this?" The child should answer "a sphere." Look at the sphere along with the picture. Encourage the child to hold the sphere. Ask the child to name the sphere again while he is holding it. When the child is finished exploring the sphere, put it back in the line with the other solids.
Turn to the next page. Read "this is a cube." Point out the picture to the child. Then ask "do we have a cube with our geometric solids?"
Help the child to find the cube. Say "This is a cube. What is this?" The child should answer "a cube." Look at the cube along with the picture. Encourage the child to hold the cube. Ask the child to name the cube again while he is holding it. When the child is finished exploring the cube, put it back in the line with the other solids.
Turn to the next page………Continue through the book until you have explored each of the geometric solids using this format.
When finished have the child help you put each of the geometric solids back in the box along with the book. Put the lid on the box. Say "Those are the geometric solids, would you like to work with them again by yourself?"
Geometric Solids:
Lesson 2
Invite the child to the lesson. Take the Geometric Solids off the shelf.
Place box containing the geometric solids on the table where you will be working. Tell child "These are the Geometric Solids."
Open the box and take out the Geometric Solids Book placing it to the side. Leave the labels in the box or put them to the side with the book.
Then take out each solid, one at a time naming each one you pull it out. Place each solid softly on the table, making a line of solids.
Tell the child "we are going to do something new with our geometric solids today. We are going to learn about their bases. The base is the part that each solid sits on, its bottom."
Take the bases out of the box one at a time. Place the bases in a line in front of the geometric solids. Discuss each base as you take it out. "This base is a circle." Have the child repeat the name after you by asking him "What is this?"
Then continue to the next base. "This base is a square. What is this?"
"This base is a rectangle. What is this?"
"This base is an equilateral triangle. What is this?"
"This base is a isosceles triangle. What is this?"
"Let's see which solids have a circle for a base." Look at the geometric solids for a moment then pick up the cone.
Put the cone on top of the circle base. Say "the cone has a circle for a base." Look at the bottom of the cone with the child observing that it is a circle like the base. Put the cone back.
Ask the child "do you see another geometric solid that has a circle for a base?" Help the child to find the cylinder.
Put the cylinder on top of the circle base. Say "the cylinder has a circle for a base like the cone." Look at the bottom of the cylinder with the child observing that it is a circle like the base. The child might want to look at the cone and the cylinder together. Put the cylinder back.
"Let's see which solids have a square for a base." Look at the geometric solids for a moment then pick up the cube.
Continue through all the bases using this same technique
After all the bases have been discussed, have the child help place each solid and bases back in the box along with the book. Put the lid back on the box.
Ask the child if he would like to do the work again by himself.
Geometric Solids:
Lesson 3
Invite the child to the lesson. Take the Geometric Solids off the shelf.
Place box containing the geometric solids on the table where you will be working. Tell child "These are the Geometric Solids."
Open the box and take out the
Geometric Solids Book and the labels placing them to the side.
Then take out each solid, one at a time naming them as you go. Place each solid softly on the table, making a line of solids. Leave the bases in the box.
Put the Geometric Solids Book and the labels in front of you. Say "Do you remember the book about the Geometric Solids? We are going to use it with our labels today."
Open to the first page and read "This is a sphere." Point out the word sphere to the child. "Let's find the label that says sphere." Help the child to find the correct label by comparing the labels to the word printed in the book. When the child presents a label tell him what it says instead of just saying yes or no. For example, "that says rectangular prism. We want the one that says sphere."
Once you have found the correct label ask the child, "can you put the word sphere with the sphere in our geometric solids?" Have the child put the label in front of the sphere.
Continue reading the book and labeling the geometric solids in this same manner.
Once all the geometric solids have been labeled, go down the line reading each one with the child. Put one finger on the label as you read it. This encourages the child to look at the word as he says it.
Have the child help put everything back in the box, one item at a time.
Ask the child "would you like to do this work again?"
