Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Patrick's real name was Maewyn Succat. As a teenager he was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland to be sold as a slave. After six years Maewyn escaped to Gaul. There he entered the monastery and studied to be a priest. It was here that he changed his name to Patrick. He set out to convert the pagans of Ireland to Christianity. Patrick worked for thirty years spreading Christianity and its beliefs to Ireland's people. Every year St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th, the anniversary of his death, in honor of him.
