The Medieval Period or Middle Ages was a time a social classifications. There were a multitude of roles filled by people according to their social class. Certain things were expected of people based on their position in life and society. People had jobs that dictated how they spent a majority of their time. People were specializing in a skill. People were chandlers, cobblers, chambermaids, stewards, lords, and ladies. Each of these people had specific responsibilities.

The lady of the castle had many responsibilities. It was up to her to make sure that the household staff did their work properly. She had to oversee the cooks in the kitchen, the chambermaids, the spinners, the weavers, and all the other staff. It was also the job of the lady of the castle to teach the pages. Pages were young boys who at the age of 7 came to the castle to study to become squires. Pages had to learn religion, music, dance, hunting, reading, and writing before they were able to become squires.

The bottler or butler was another important figure in the castle. Like many of the castle positions, the bottler had a staff of people working under him. It was his responsibility to make sure that his staff was working well and keeping the buttery full of drink. Other castle positions included the marshal who oversaw the stables, the chamberlain, the chaplain, and the keeper of the wardrobe.

The chandler and his staff were responsible for keeping enough candles made to light the castle. Castles were dark cold places. This was long before electricity so candles and firelight were the only source of light after the sun went down. Even during the day candles were sometimes necessary because there weren't always enough windows to light rooms within the castle.

Everyone in the castle had a job to be done. All of these people relied upon one another. They had to work together to make sure that everything was done. The chandler made candles for the whole castle not just for himself. The bottler ensured there was enough for everyone to drink.
